The Alchemiya Journal

A Journal of Muslim Film, Culture, Creativity, Art and Education

Short film, Nobody’s Metaphor follows four teenage Muslim girls as they learn to fence and express themselves, challenging discrimination in the process. It is a powerful documentary with much contemporary relevance, especially for our young women.
Nooreh is an award-winning film set in a village on the India-Pakistan border. Told from the perspective of an eight-year-old Muslim girl, it is a subtle and powerful story about the effects of conflict on children.
On A Wing and A Prayer is a heart-warming documentary that follows Monem Salam's attempts to get a US pilot's license. A film about a resilient family as American and suburban as The Simpsons, but Muslim!

@Alchemiya is a new platform I’ve come across and looks much more appealing for the Muslim community than Netflix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alchemiya is an online video streaming service that offers high quality movies, drama, documentaries, educational content, children shows and entertaining television programmes that celebrate the culture, arts, people, places, ideas and achievements of Muslims past and present.
We were not happy with the negative portrayal of Muslims in the mainstream media and believe that the ownership of Muslim stories and narratives belongs to the Muslim community. Rather than protest, we envisioned a dedicated platform that would respect and celebrate the very best of our culture. Our mission is to empower Muslim creatives to produce positive, identity affirming, beautiful content that is authentic.
Not exactly – we are not a madrassa or masjid, we are a television service that is here to inspire, educate and entertain. Our content is focused on culture, art, history, food, fashion, travel, people almost anything. The fact that it is about Islam and Muslims, means that much of it features and focuses on religious themes. We don’t shy away from religion, but at the same time, we are not a substitute for worship and serious study of Islam.

We take pride in being a small business and currently the majority of Alchemiya is owned by the founder and employees. We have around 130 small ‘crowd’ investors who helped us with seed money. Long term we seek to work with investors who are aligned with our values and have plans to create an Alchemiya Foundation to support Muslim creatives.

We were first called that by the Saudi Gazette and the name has stuck. It has helped, as people immediately got what we do. We are NOT the Netflix of Islam – we are a small startup that is led by its purpose to ‘celebrate the very best of Muslim culture’. This purpose guides how we operate and who we work with. Unlike Netflix, we do not have $Billions to spend on content and apps, but we are growing organically and many of our customers support our purpose and company values.

There is a huge shortage of watchable drama, movies and children’s programmes for a global Muslim audience. Alchemiya is committed to producing its own content, and as the platform grows, our intention is to divert income into production. Our founder Navid Akhtar has over 25 years of experience in mainstream television, including the BBC. Alchemiya is run and managed with a focus on supporting Muslim creative talent and we aim to finance their productions.

Netflix spent $15 billion on original content in 2019, Disney spent $20 billion and the BBC spends $2.6 billion. 50% our subscription income goes to our content creators. Alchemiya charges for its service as this is the best way to ensure that Muslim creative talent is rewarded and encouraged to produce more content.

Absolutely, all of our content is selected with the widest possible audience in mind. We have many non Muslim customers, supporters, partners and welcome them all. We believe that the world will become a more peaceful place if we all take time to learn and appreciate our different cultures and beliefs.
